FAQ

Frequently asked questions we get from Peak Energy Chiropractic clients.

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the scientific fact that your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body including functions of every day life. It focuses on the integrity of your nervous system. Interference to the nervous system will effect how it relates to the cells to which it travels.

How is my body affected?

Your spinal cord which consists of all the nerves that go to every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body go through your spine, where they exit at certain levels of the spine depending on their function. You have over 200 bones in your body and 24 in your spine. Wherever two bones come together, there is a joint. Since these joints are so close to your spinal cord, too much or too little joint motion can cause serious effects as most of your nerves that control your body exit through the holes that are formed by these joints. If these joints get misaligned or fixated, which is also called a subluxation, they can cause nerve irritation and damage. The damage doesn’t stop there. If these misalignments are not fixed, muscles can become weak, ligaments weak, and osteoarthritis and degeneration begins.

How do you get subluxations?

There are three basic causes of subluxations. They are physical stress, such as accidents, falls, repetitive injuries and improper lifting, and/or sitting at a desk all day. Emotional stresses, such as jobs, stress, divorce. Chemical stress, such as tobacco, drugs, alcohol and pollution.

Can subluxations clear up on their own?

Our bodies have the innate ability to heal and self-correct minor problems that may arise in our bodies. Often times, by the time they are symptom causing, a subluxation cannot clear up on its own.

Can chiropractic help me?

Everyone can benefit from an improved communication between your brain and your body. If you have altered nerve communication between your brain and the rest of your body, you could be a good candidate for chiropractic care.

How long will it take?

How fast you get better depends on a number of things.

  • Your Age
  • Your Problem
  • Your Discipline
  • Your Goal
  • Your Attitude

Your chiropractor does not do the healing, your body does. Your chiropractor will reduce nerve interference and enhance your body’s ability to heal. Some people see results quickly, children are often among the fastest to respond since any nerve interference has been present for a shorter period of time and their body is still growing. Your healing potential is hindered by inactivity, obesity and accumulated stress or neglect to your body such as drugs, tobacco and alcohol. We as humans have limitations in our ability to heal and it is your chiropractor’s job to make sure your healing potential functions to your best ability. Most symptoms subside long before muscles and ligaments supporting your spine can fully heal, that’s when it’s tempting to end your care, which predisposes you to a relapse.

I heard that once you start going to a chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life! Is that true?

People often hear that once they start going to a chiropractor, they will have to go for the rest of their lives. Truth is, chiropractic is like health for your spine, which ultimately affects your whole body. Those who choose to practice a health lifestyle of wellness and prevention continue to get adjusted on a less frequent basis and visit periodically to get their regular chiropractic check up. Imagine it like going to the dentist, for your spine. Regular check ups are important in making sure your spine stays aligned and your nervous system is functioning properly, preventing more serious conditions.

Is chiropractic covered by health care?

Chiropractic is not covered under Nova Scotia health care. Many people have supplemental health care coverage either personally or through work. Usually limited chiropractic coverage is offered through insurance and it is your responsibility to place a high value on your health. Even though insurance companies might be helpful, do not allow your insurance company to make important decisions about your health.

Can I expect instant relief?

Some people get instant relief after their first adjustment, others find the healing process takes weeks, months and sometimes years. Everyone responds at their own rate, your body does the healing.

Will I get adjusted on my first visit?

Usually on your first visit, Dr. Deveau will do a consultation and take a history, perform an examination and X-rays if they are required. Typically, there will be no spinal adjusting on the first visit as careful analysis of your examination and X-ray findings is required.

Will it hurt?

Dr. Deveau uses biomedical advances in computers and technology to adjust the spine. An instrument called the Spine Align enables Dr. Deveau to adjust the segments of the spinal column without twisting or turning.
